Where Your Money Is Going
Among NDP’s top priorities is transparency, both in terms of operations and cost structure. For each fundraising activity, we will be posting a breakdown of exactly how we plan to spend the proceeds.
October 5, 2006 NDP Golf Tournament:
The First annual NDP Golf Tournament was a great success. All total, we netted more than $1,000. Combined with private donations and previous smaller fundraising efforts, we were able to begin the implementation of our first project! $4,500 was given to WaterPartners, who will oversee a well-digging initiative based in Tigray, Ethiopia (Tigray Initiative). According to WaterPartners’ Nikki Speer, our money will fund almost an entire well project (around $5,000), and provide the basic means for survival to hundreds of the world’s poorest people.
Thanks to everyone involved in the tournament. Your money and efforts will save many lives. NDP will post updates on our progress as developments are made.
June 30, 2006 Kickoff Benefit:
We were able to raise approximately $2,000 (USD) with this event. Because it’s our very first event, virtually 100% of the proceeds will be going to structural costs and start-up fees:
Massachusetts Business Registration fees: $35+
Application for 501(c)3 non-profit tax exempt status: $750
Outsourced web design: $300
Website Domain fees: $10 per month
Deposit for NDP Golf Tournament (Oct. 5, 2007): $1,000
While it is indeed frustrating that all of the money from our first event must go toward such expenses, it is important to understand that, with the exception of the $10 per month website fee, these are all one-time costs. Going forward, virtually all raised funds will be going toward implementation of an NDP project in the Horn of Africa. Our Finance Director, Jared Peterson, estimates our projected expense ratio to be less than 5% (Oxfam’s is greater than 15%). This exceptionally low number is a product of our extremely low cost base. Why are our costs so much lower than other aid groups? Besides our ultra-efficient, barebones operating structure, the main reason for this impressive stat is that everyone on NDP works pro-bono. That means nobody gets paid, not even the administrative team. This is just one of the many reasons NDP represents the next level of enlightened development projects.
